Extremely impressive that Ridley Scott was able to make a 20 year spanning, napoleonic era epic with a concise 100 minute runtime in his directorial debut. Initially decided on this tonight because Harvey Keitel playing a Frenchman with a New York accent sounded like a fun time (it is though I still prefer him as Judas), but I quickly became invested by the film’s beautiful cinematography and strong narrative. Scott was cooking with gas early in his career and The Duellists is no exception.

Movies with this amount of energy are magnetic. While Anora does go off the rails at times, I was too caught up in the whirlwind of hilarity and emotion to care. A true standout film this year based on performances alone and not only from Madison, but the entire cast as well. Worth seeing in a packed theater to hear the crowd’s reactions throughout and their stunned silence as the credits start to roll.

The Substance 2024
With a different director and cast, The Substance may have failed to be anything more than a shallow Black Mirror episode. Thankfully, the film’s style and its performances from Moore and Quaid are very memorable. The film’s entertainment lies in its ability to balance dark humor with moments of horrific dread. Everything you could ask for from a body horror and references the greats of the genre constantly. Gross, unnerving, and uncomfortably funny from start to finish. Also Dennis Quaid eating shrimp is the scene of the year.
