An emotionally resonant and stunningly beautiful film for 90% of the run time that tries to get too clever at the end and doesn't stick the landing. If it had stuck to the core theme of loss and coming to terms with grief it would have been a clearer win. Perhaps a little rote in terms of the overall plot and the main villain falls into cartoonish supervillainy at points but this hit me in ways I wasn't expecting. Mads gives a great, surprisingly subtle performance here and the cinematography is first rate. I don't know how accurate this is to the actual history but you'll never look at the idea of planting potatoes the same way again.

I'm topping up to three stars because the performances are good, there's a couple of solid scenes of Dylan being a shithead, and I like hearing these songs but it's pretty big missed opportunity.

Second time watching this; very happy to report I was not incorrect to love it the first time around. Knew I was in for something good when there was a shot of a Ross Perot ballot line within the first five minutes and the hits just keep coming from there.

I don't even think it's appropriate to call this an "allegory" for the trans experience, the thing literally starts with the main character being enveloped in a parachute in the…
