I had watched this several times as a kid, but after a fresh watch as an adult, I can’t believe I never realized how this film is clearly a story about an alcoholic father and the pain and terror he puts his family through. The haunting and paranormal are just a device to tell that story. Every shot is either framed in narrow hallways where we feel trapped or in big open spaces where there’s a sense of vulnerability. While the movie does verge on the over the top at times, it’s still a great watch.
A film full of mystery and beauty. If you try to make too much sense of it, I think it would lose a lot of its magic. I was blown away by the imagery and the constant surprises in every scene. Studio Ghibli really is a treasure and I feel enriched having watched this film.
The film is entertaining and predictable. While the narrative moves at an enjoyable pace, I felt like the values the film endorses were cartoonish.
A classic that still holds today. Linda Hamilton is too cool as Sarah Connor and Arnold was born to play the terminator. It’s a miracle they turned Arnold’s stiff acting into asset for the role. Some of the acting from the kid who plays John Connor is a little distracting, but still he does a good job portraying that grungy anti-authority vibe of the early 90s.
