I had such high hopes for this film, and was anticipating a feminist retelling of Frankenstein. Visually, the film was mesmerizing. The sets, landscapes, and costumes created this intoxicating, surrealist, art nouveau ambience. Though, while it was gorgeously made and extremely well-acted… I am dumbfounded by the hyper-sexualization of Bella’s character. It’s a movie made by a man about the infantilization and exploitation of women… that just seems to further exploit women.
