a film all about good vibes and not much else. very lackluster in what it was trying to say about dylan’s musical path from folk to mainstream rock/pop.

    johnny cash was dope tho.

an ending so inevitable, so anticipated in all the built-up tension and suspense, that one can’t help but audibly cackle when it finally happens.

    “What’s the difference?”

    Devastating.

    kubrick man….

an anti-war film that understands the role of the bureaucracy. completely harrowing in its depiction of injustice at the hand of the bourgeois-imperialist state, in this case, france in world war one. There is no single cruel man, but an institution larger than any individual, designed to carry out the ruling class’ interests, no matter the cost in dignity or in lives.

remarkable and truly one of kubrick’s best pieces.

    ★★½

bone chilling. terrifying depiction of the montreal massacre. though it does fall flat in its content due to the bourgeois conception of feminism and women’s liberation it espouses throughout the film and especially at the end. extreme misogynistic violence towards women will only erode and vanish when the material basis for it is destroyed via a proletarian revolution and the patriarchal ideas that fuel it are struggled against thereafter.

of course, in this depiction, a woman may be “liberated” through the individual act of acquiring a petty-bourgeois engineering job at some defense contractor in service of the bourgeois state.
