So much to love in this. The references to the first film and to other sword and sandles epics from Hollywood’s glory days, the way Paul Mescal can make you really feel the love for his wife, Joseph Quinn and the opulence and tyranny of the twin emperors, the performance of Denzel Washington… only downside is I feel Paul Mescal isn’t able to quite match Russell Crowe in his big speech oratory. But matching the first film was always going to be a Herculean task.
