The Power of the Dog 2021
Jonny Greenwood's score is neither endemic nor anachronistic, instead we feel the looming presence of 1920's modernism, its values and aesthetics emanating from both 'islands of civilisation', and the vast invisible front behind Montana's eastern horizon, certain as sunrise. It's a wave that crashes against and dissolves Phil's 'queer universe', threatening the existence of 'stakes'. Phil is composed of a series of movements that resemble a hunched, poised, overly-reactive, excited, curious, depraved, but above all else, terrified animal, darting towards his target to seize it briefly with calloused fingertips and retreat back to safety.
