my boyfriend handed me a bottle of wine and sat down with me to watch this. as a musical, it really doesn’t use music as a way to further the plot except for that haunting motif of a melody on piano. besides that - i actually though i was going to throw up watching this movie. excellent performances from big leads and beautiful writing - i’d do anything to get my hands on a copy of the script. such a harsh reminder that sometime love isn’t enough and to get your dream you can’t have your soulmate.

proud to say i didn’t sob through ALL of the movie but i did for atleast 3/4th of it. as a child who watched her mother fight cancer this movie felt extremely personal. the realness that both pugh and garfield brought to their performances, specifically garfield, were so palpable and real and gut-wrenching. there were so many stand out moment in this movie and the storytelling, while predictable, was done well in my opinion. a wonderful mix of humor and shock, this definitely is ranked up there with la la land for me.

to preface: i have not read the book - a stunning show of humanity and how power can drive someone to the brink of madness. i was afraid going into the movie that it would another cash grab like most prequels are in order to prolong a series, but i was pleasantly surprised at how original and worth watching it was. my only negative is that I wish it would’ve focused more on the relationship between Snow and Lucy Gray to further drive his switch to the capital. overall, a beautiful, jaw-dropping film that i'll definitely watch again.
