the part where calum spits the toothpaste on his reflection in the mirror, wondering if his daughter inherited his mental illness (?) felt so emotionally charged, I damn near flinched at the screen. Of course my summary is very blunt, but the scene itself is just subtle enough I don’t feel like they’re beating me over the head with the looming dread of the film but showed just enough to be upsetting. I think that is the beauty of this film. Subtlety layering on top of itself, with no huge tragedy START CRYING NOW moment that explains the whole movie. There is no catharsis.
