  While I thought James Dean did a great job of capturing Cal’s true nature, I think that cutting Lee entirely makes it so that Cal’s progression throughout the novel is stunted in this depiction. So much of Lee’s character gets projected onto Abra and Adam, which does not work the same way within the established character relationships. Similar feelings about Sam Hamilton here.
