I watch this again completely enrapt by the world it presents; it’s my favourite thing Lynch ever did (although still watching The Return) and just perfectly combines all his different cinematic interests. There’s so many scenes in this that just make me super excited when i know they’re coming up and I was just smiling so god damn much during the first 110 minutes. The last 30 are even more brutal and depressing than i’d ever considered before and I think I kind of underestimated how ultimately bitter Diane Selwyn is and the film becomes as a result. I get it though.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me 1992
Takes a bit of getting used to how much it submerges you in the darkness of Laura Palmer’s life, but once you’re in there it is impossible to take your eyes away. I don’t quite understand the thematic relevance of the prologue apart from showing the wider world that Twin Peaks exists in (which The Return will later blow wide open) and it’s just a little too detached from the rest of the film for me. Possibly the most haunting film i’ve ever seen…

Hard Truths 2024
Genuinely brutal film about familial trauma and depression. Feels like it was made for me to be honest- just a divine character study (although also balancing a wide ensemble) with a very compelling screenplay and performances. I wish more films felt this true to life and unafraid to handle topics like this.
