A difficult but important documentary about the ruthless destruction of homes and the displacement of Palestinian families in the village of Masafer Yatta in the West Bank.
Most inspiring is the spirit of the community resisting the most brutal invasions and intimidation tactics by soldiers and settlers.
What gives the documentary its heart is the growing bond between the two young men making the film; Palestinian resident Basel and Israeli journalist Yuval. It is their dialogue throughout getting to understand each other's life experiences, values, ambitions and dreams which provides hope through the despair.
Tomas is a self involved filmmaker living in Paris looking for a constant flow of validation he seeks out an affair with a young woman desite already being married to a man.
Tomas is impulsive, indecisive and damaged and his selfish comings and goings come to a head in the restrained but tragic sadness of the final scenes.
The chemistry isn't always convincing but the complex romantic entanglements of this strange love triangle is compelling.
Warning: this film is incredibly dark (and unrelenting) (and based on a true story).
It's edge of the seat as this dark and twisted story unfolds in unexpected places.
Filmed in monochrome and tonally with touches of the surreal this horror drama has some elements of Von Trier.
Following Karoline through bad to worse and then some. It is hard to watch some of the disturbing scenes and yet still impossible not to be captivated and intrigued.
Based on a true story which I didn't know until the very end of the film which makes it even more powerful.
A stunning but understated performance by Fernanda Torres (worthy of all the awards praise) of a woman determined to fight for justice, and keep her family together whilst processing unimaginable loss.
The film does a wonderful job of creating a sense of space and time, and bringing the audience in to the closeness of the family dynamic.
I found it very moving, personal and intimate.
