The scene with the clown shooting a gun made me feel like I was accidentally watching a Harmony Korine movie. It seems like the Kaurismaki romanticization of French New Wave and American noir was fully realized in this one. There were some funny laugh out loud moments in between the weird side plot crime storyline side plot romance. Maybe every plot was a side plot? It was still fun to see youthful Matti and Aki.

Calamari Union 1985
I like this film a lot more the 3rd or 4th time around. I feel like I found a lot more things to laugh at, which I needed.

The Match Factory Girl 1990
Weird that this is a comfort movie for me but...maybe not weird...
So crazy that Kati Outinen starred in Shadows in Paradise 4 years before this film and yet she is able to make herself seem 10 years younger, more fragile and naïve as Iris - a huge contrast to Ilona who is more hardened and distrustful. I see myself in both of these characters lol. Love her <3

Rocco and His Brothers 1960
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
It was an interesting film, especially towards the ending.
Ciro, the most stable/level-headed brother is shown as succeeding in embracing change, adapting to life in the city and rejecting traditional values, whereas Rocco is stuck in the past, romanticizing his hometown and the life his family had there. Simone is kind of the fulcrum between the two extremes, as he initially thrives in his new environment but ultimately becomes corrupted by it. Nadia, unfortunately, as a woman has the Madonna/Putana…Translated from by
