  Feels weird to say since I’ve loved other Eggers movies, but I really wanted more from this one. Was hoping to see another atmospheric slow boil. Instead, the sexual repression theming was like being hit in the head with a brick repeatedly, could’ve been more subtle. Not a bad movie by any stretch (wonderful performances by the 5,000 trained rats and all of the cats) but I don’t think this measures up to the other Eggers films.

  Whiplash-inducing tone changes and almost a complete lack of originality. It tries to prop up its lack of substance on a projectile vomit of insipid pop culture references which almost work to keep you distracted before a quip of awkward dialogue or eye-rolling sequence draws you back out again.

  You can predict the ending before even sitting down to watch, which means the journey there needs to be compelling. And this ain’t it.

Following
