Anora made me laugh constantly and also stressed me the fuck out - much like Uncut Gems really. It’s a wild ride, and Mikey Madison delivers a phenomenal performance that keeps you locked in the whole way.
That said I watched this with my girlfriend and the first ten minutes were an uncomfortable watch considering I’d picked the film.
Would be unfairly pigeonholed as just another a road trip movie, although it does have all the trappings of one, it’s one that’s refreshingly comfortable with leaving things unresolved. Weighty moments linger with you, anchored by wonderful performances from the two leads.
Culkin will deservedly be praised for his standout performance, but Eisenberg is quietly excellent as the straight man. Curious to see what he does next.
On a related note, mishegoss is a fantastic word. Love when movies give you those little etymological gifts.
If you know me at all, you’ll know I like my vampire films the way I like my coffee—
with the lights firmly on.
This might be Eggers’ best film to date. Incredibly horny, dripping with dread, and visually stunning, every frame feels meticulously crafted. Skarsgard absolutely sinks his teeth into the role of Orlok (pun very intended), delivering yet another unforgettable performance. Can’t wait to see what he does next.
I’ll never watch this film again because as a well adjusted human being, horror is never enjoyable, but I’m glad I did.
Doesn’t match the heady heights of the original trilogy, and the story is unfocused for most of the film, but enjoyable moments and I’ll never tire of hearing ‘Ape Together Strong’
