There Will Be Blood 2007
An interesting commentary on the brutal reality of capitalism. The juxtaposition of the old (religious exploitation) and the new (oil) proves to be a compelling narrative. Will definitely require a second watch, as watching on a airplane is probably not the preferred experience.

The Great Silence 1968
Bleak and grim this is perhaps the most thorough deconstruction of the Western genre. The killer Loco is perhaps the most vile villain I’ve seen in a western and Silence is a compelling character, a traditional western hero trying to do right and a brutal world. I think Frank Wolff’s performance as the lawful sheriff is an incredibly underrated performance and stacks up well with Kinski and Trintignant. Morricone’s score is brilliant and the cinematography is gorgeous. Easily on par…
