Crazy, Stupid, Love. 2011
I normally hate comedy plots that rely on miscommunication, but I actually laughed a lot during this movie. Don’t get me wrong, it was dumb. Super, super stupid. Took a long time to get where it was going. But it was funny (and cringey) all along the way.

I love that they weren’t afraid to take time to tell the story in great detail and depth. I fear that Grande overshadowed Erivo, perhaps because of the writing and direction but also because the production mix was shockingly out of balance. However, the world-building through set, ensemble, and lighting adds a new vibe to the classic musical. Perhaps the film would have earned five stars if I wasn’t subconsciously holding it to the standard of the staged musical. Regardless, the choreography and camerawork will remain legendary, and the casting is top notch.
