  The Kid Who Would Be King 2019

  This was mostly spurred on by my friend and watching through the KARATE KID films. I've been lamenting the lack of recent films about boys and, while I think that this scratched the itch some, it's still not exactly what I was looking for. All of the young performers are great and it's got a real sense of peril (even though it could have been matched with more urgency).

  While I appreciate its simplicity of theme, its also easy to see why it kinda just came and went.

  FIRST DATE is a weird, tense, and funny beast. Off beat is some of the best and worst ways, it starts slow and odd but eventually morphs into this insane mashup of early (PULP FICTION, RESERVOIR DOGS) Tarantino and NICK & NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST.

  It feel like a first film because it is, but it's a very good first film. I liked it but I would describe it as more interesting than anything else.

  Wish I saw it with a crowd.

  12 Angry Men 1957

  A hit that sticks like grits.

  I think I return to 12 ANGRY MEN over and over because it's just SO propulsive. A slick masterclass in blocking and a captivating stew of persuasion, prejudice and the human capacity for curiosity. I love how concerned with the gravity of the conflict and the limits of our cherished "due process." Nearly perfect big ticket shit.

  Also, Joseph Sweeney? Movie grandpa hall of famer.
