Despite zero narrative structure or character development, I absolutely loved living in this world and watching all the actors give stellar performances.
Normally Linklater is my guy, so this was pretty disappointing. I'm not sure if Netflix pushed through an unfinished script, if the producers got cold feet about something, if Linklater just phoned this one in, or if he's actually losing his touch.
There are brief hints of the director that made McConaughey a star, or made three movies each based on a single extended, esoteric conversation. But the cringe far outpaces those moments.

Felt like reading a novel in the best and worst ways.
Tedious at times, but usually in a way that was pleasant, satisfying, and meditative. Aside from one or two questionable camera movements, the scenery, acting, and composition is incredible enough to make the time spent there pleasing and worthwhile. Also an incredible use of an atypical aspect ratio.
For less than ten percent the budget of Godzilla vs Kong, you get twice the cinema, and one thousand percent more heart.
I haven't seen a lot of modern Japanese films, so some of the pacing and acting choices I found curious, but I'm willing to chock that up to cultural differences in visual storytelling.
