there’s something very cool and interesting about the relationship between life and memory in this that i still have to think about! but for now: in a world where death doesn’t have to be permanent, the most precious thing a person has is not their life but their memories (a sentiment i fuck with).

maybe it’s because i spent a year reading the wolf hall trilogy and know the players and game here pretty well (or at least mantel’s version), but this worked for me. i liked the framing of it as elizabeth’s story about her (pseudo) mother surviving her father without compromising her beliefs. it also really sells the never-ending fear of living at the command of a man like that. and honestly a fave portrayal of henry at the end of his life—dangerous and rotting.
