Boasts some perfect scenes (particularly that of the town hall), the setting is well-crafted, and its characters are written so delicately that the film tends towards the sublime. It's a heavy misfortune that it ends as it does, on a note that clearly fancies itself profound but succeeds only at lazy pretence.
