A phenomenal interpretation of the Vampire myth, eschewing much of the modern pop cultural appeals to the Dracula archetype in favor of redefining the folkloric, pagan-catholic figure of absolute avarice and unknowable evil. Rewatching this movie after Deadpool and Wolverine was a nice reminder to just how good some of the Fox X-Men movies could be. Despite its intention to serve as a soft reboot for the franchise I personally prefer to think of it as the final before Logan, as it ends in a very comfortable place for all the characters (And the subsequent Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix don’t add much to the pot.)

The sense of space this film is able to express is truly stunning, not only is the setting itself visually compelling, but the way in which light is used to bend and twist shadows around the sharp corners and uneven cobbles of Vienna makes the very real post-war city feel like something out of a dream. It’s refreshing to return to the Noir genre at its roots, before it became so heavily steeped in its own tropes.
