Death of a Unicorn 2025
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
This movie was fucking BONKERS. It had like three different genres going on & was both overwhelming and occasionally underwhelming but more than anything else— it rocked. It felt like an amalgamation of all styles of popular film in the 2020’s thus far, the hits & the flops. Watched this in the theater & it felt like I was being held captive. Very all over the place and the dialogue wasn’t great. I couldn’t tell if it was trying to be camp or drama and it didn’t fully deliver on either front. Mark Ruffalo & Toni Collette’s performances were the most redeeming aspect by a mile.

Like… It makes sense that this is rated G but I don’t think it’s suitable for children. This movie is SO scary, if i had watched it as a child it would have given me nightmares. That may have more to do with my relationship with apes and robots than the film but still, terrifying watch & the soundtrack does NOT help. As always, Kubrick is a master of immersion #lovethatguy.

Full Metal Jacket 1987
A strange film to process being born after 9/11 & having a baseline hatred of the military, also strange to watch because the main character looked a hell of a lot like my mother. I don’t know how to articulate how I feel about the content but here’s what I can: Kubrick can frame a shot and pace a story like no one else, even with all of the discomfort of the story being told and how it made me feel I couldn’t look away. He’s such a strong director and his legacy is well earned.
