  A lot of directors that I really like have a tendency to make characters speak in very distinctive and stylized ways (Lynch, Shyamalan, etc) that don't really scan as "real" outside the context of the film they are in. Kore-eda is like that too, but rather than deploying it in a way that feels disorienting or alienating, it's much more tender and open.
