Good premise and not bad shots. Really like the monsterification and scare scenes as well. What really took me out was the characterisations -- had to check that how long ago the movie was made to find, not long ago! The peoples' characters were such caricatures that it brought me out of the suspense and made me really frustrated instead. The underlying plot (and twist) relating to the trauma with the mother could've really been done better and popped off. It took itself really seriously which is why I critiqued it more harshly as well.
Not sure I'd give the same rating if I had watched it back in the 2000s, but I would've also been 4 years old and kid's opinions don't matter.

A let-down, especially since I loved The VVitch.
Unsure if it was the directing, editing or screenplay, but the tone & pacing of the movie was completely off. The general story beats are already set in stone; an atmospheric horror tone does not suit it since it has a lot to get through. Perhaps an action horror tone like Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) would have been more appropriate -- although I can see how they might've wanted to deviate from that.…
