Apart from the fact that this was an incredible film all around, it's also my first WWII war-themed movie — and it was a different experience altogether to see the second world war as something unfinished, to listen to an impassioned speech about fighting back, knowing those words were spoken when said fighting was actually going on.
But WWII-specific bits aside, it's also an intriguing character study that essentially has an entire nation and era as its subject. A daring film for its time.
