Fully admit I watched this for Deborah Ann Woll, but I found myself surprised by how enjoyable it was. Characters were likable and sympathetic, the plot was entertaining, and the majority of the escape room puzzles were just challenging enough that I didn't spend the movie yelling at the characters for being dumb.
This clearly sets itself up for a sequel (and I believe one is in production right now), and while I don't need one, I would consider seeing it, depending on who's in it.
Was lucky enough to see this in the theater for the 40th Anniversary. I'd seen some scenes here and there but never the whole movie, and it's very clear why this has stood the test of time. It's a perfect blend of horror and sci-fi, with likable characters, an amazing protagonist, and a very memorable monster. This starts out as a fairly run-of-the-mill supernatural thriller about a shadowy figure that abducts children away from their families and turns into absolute tripe whose message is basically that children are better off being kidnapped from their poor families and placed with rich strangers than living below the poverty line. The Ring scared the shit out of me when I saw it for the first time in 2003 and every time I've managed to watch it since then. It's one of maybe two horror movies to leave a lasting impression on me in that way, and I haven't been able to watch it more than twice.
