Jonah Hill stumbles onto radical reflexivity, which sounds like it could be too navel- gazing to be good. But it quickly decides to have that conversation directly with the viewer, and gets our consent to dive so completely into the navel that it comes back out the womb. I see it as a portrait of a man, a portrait of the man making the portrait of the man, and the sense of bittersweet love and worry about loss that causes one to make a portrait of a man.
