The strongest aspect of this film is the performances, which basically assumes the weight of the entire story. As for the story itself, it’s very moving and raw, to the point where it’s almost worth forgetting about the rest of this film’s misgivings. But in terms of the storytelling, with the exception of the performances, everything comes off as wrongfully experimental, borderline pretentious, and at times lazy. The film was competent during the first two thirds, but it took a nosedive during the third act as it destroyed anything that might have been built up prior, all because ”the soul” of the movie rested completely upon the abstract, just to finish illustrating any metaphor that might have previously been more “grounded”. The entire film was too convoluted with its analogies, causing everything to eventually spin out of control. It seemed like Garland wrote himself into a corner in the attempt to be “intellectual and poetic”, and the result was an unmotivated, inconclusive, and unsatisfying ending.

I had a feeling that I knew what to expect and literally within the first scene, I found myself saying “And here we fucking go”. And from then on, it was just a 118 minute long plummet. All I’ll say is that this was classic Shyamalan: bad.

You can tell that at best, he comes up with interesting concepts. But Jesus Christ, he…

Honestly, I think the trailer duped a lot of people, but it never got me. From the start, I felt like Timothee Chalamet had zero business being in a franchise sci-fi epic of this massive of a scale. I feel like if you have to write in jokes about how he's not even really physically fit for the role (even though they could've changed that), it's probably an indicator of a cash-grab tactic. At least that's how it came off…
