Pollution, slaughter, hatred, warfare. A classic grim-dark tale from Studio Ghibli!
Okay actually.
For a basic prince-seeks-prize story, Miyazaki manages to refract human exploitation through a prism of motivations.
He doesn’t hold anything back. The violence is absurd. People’s limbs pop off like Legos. The forest gives and take. Humans create and destroy.
The complexity colors the film’s hopeful message with poignancy and power. It becomes a sophisticated, cautious tale that is not betrayed by idealism.
I think this is Ghibli’s most sagacious work.
