    There are pleasures to be had here. Laurence Olivier in full 1970’s cash-grab mode, Tommy Lee Jones at his hot bod peak. And that unmistakeable 70’s high-class trash sheen that permeated a corner of the era's film and TV.

    As a gay man I have trouble taking gangster and samurai films seriously because of the hyper-masculine camp factor. On its own terms this film is impeccable; its world is just so goddamn silly. A major plot point turns on men's hairstyles, specifically the unrecoverable humiliation of another man basically mussing your do. As I'm sure was true in 1600! But likely even by 1962 -- and absolutely today -- it all plays as deeply silly camp to anyone who's sucked a dick
