  slow enough at work that i managed to watch this again. played Before and After Science by Brian Eno while watching, and there were a few good syncs there tbh

  so enthralling from the very beginning. the scene towards the end with Hess in the church was overpowering. the interwoven musings on eroticism (homoeroticism, in particular) in relation to sin, the warm acceptance of christ, and the indulgence, comfort, and lengths of addiction are all prominent. it’s really all that it is, i think. and it never seems to truly decide where it stands on any of them. likely, pro-church and anti-addiction, but i really think you could come away with the opposite, as well (which i think resonated with me just as intensely).
