I have never seen a more effective film, nor one with a scope that comes close. And yet, what truly surprised me was that in the midst of all of the spectacle was an incredibly tight, well written central plot with relationships I cared about and themes sometimes so appropriate for the world we live in right now that it was hard to watch. It takes everything that worked about the first film and runs with it, and to work so well with the first film while also adapting a novel like Dune is astounding. I wish it could have gone on for hours longer.

I don't know how else it could have been done, but the last 30 minutes or so of this movie drag like hell. It's a shame because it works very well by itself, but when the pacing of the first two hours is so close to perfect, you can really feel it start to slip.

This being said, for a movie in which basically only one important thing happens, the world and atmosphere that was created for "Dune" is unprecedented, even for Villeneuve. And for a story written down in the 1960s, it's scary how important and relevant it has continued to be even now.

On this rewatch, I think a lot of the plot and motivation surrounding the action and characters has gotten a lot worse for me. It feels very much like the film takes real-world issues and superimposes glamorized violence on top of them, without adding anything of substance to that original material. Some of the film also crosses a line for that goes from glamorizing over-the-top unrealistic spy shenanigans to glamorizing actual war crimes with peppy rock music in the background…
