I've read this as a battle of power dynamics in the past and it absolutely is, but this viewing really put the Beauty and the Beast subtext front and center for me. It became kinder, more hopeful about the potential for transformation. I was moved. This is a deeply romantic film.*

Another day, another misbegotten attempt to make cartoon characters from the 1930s work in a modern setting. These characters aren't really built for long format storytelling and any attempt to give them a character arc seems like a mistake. The animation is fun and expressive, but the sugar high of it all grates after about 15 minutes. I'm old.
A grotesque Frankenstein's monster of Disney throwing anything that's worked for them in the past decade into a cauldron. Toss in the postmodern snark of Frozen, a bit of the Cinderella screenplay, and while we're at it, shove in Flynn Rider and wrap it all up with a bizarre communist manifesto.
