I saw this movie at film forum at the urging of literally every friend who attended NYU. I knew, based on the crowd in attendance, that I prob wouldn’t like it. The overly crowded theater and narrow rows were peopled with bad mullets, micro pigtails, and self-induced bangs. Ugh, ultimately it’s a beautifully shot film whose central motive force is trying to convince us that male abusers are sympathetic creatures, too. Though that’s the film’s sole narrative thrust it is often elided by those who herald it—and even those who don’t. Womp womp.

Nah, this movie is PASSED crazy. First of all the art direction was VERY bussin. All archival footage. You rarely see that. Basically it’s about the West meddling in the Congo after WWII and how the CIA finessed cultural influence to gain a foothold there, politically. The CIA created a fake agency called the African Cultural Exchange (or smth). They had Nina Simone in the Congo and she didn’t even kno she was workin for the feds 😭. Big Jazz…
