Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood 2019
was gonna give this movie a solid 4 or 4.5 based on the first 30 minutes.
I thought it was going to be more of a character study and an exploration of the natural progression of a successful actor’s career. In that aspect, casting Leonardo DiCaprio — a man that had arguably one of the most impressive rise to fame in his 20s, a level of stardom that is once ima generation — was spectacular. Opus 2025
This movie felt like someone copied 9 of their classmates homework but didn’t incorporate their own original thread of nuance. I didn’t feel attached to any of the characters besides Ayo’s (girl was ACTING even with that script) but even then, her whole motivations about wanting to be a writer for certain reasons were just… abandoned? Idk there were some cool shots and the cool A24 pulsing noises I guess.

Gonna go to my kids’ school and ask the teachers to have the class watch this during Black History Month instead of whatever black trauma movie I had to watch with the white kids starting at me like 👁️👄👁️
Also, the fact that Spike Lee made a film so artistically and narratively poignant as this one so early in his career and got NELSON MANDELA IN IT almost makes me green with envy. Like some people are just born to use their gift huh???
