-this means every event seen has his biases to it, it's not an objective viewing of the situation
-with that established, it makes a lot more sense how Summer was so confusing and inconsistent, Tom exaggerated the good and the bad, and the audience can only see what he sees

good movie but only a decent adaptation of the book (understandably, many details and events skimmed over, altered, or skipped altogether for the sake of a more watchable film)
- spectacle over substance for the most part
- WILDLY omitted Pi' religious experiences, including one of the best moments in the book (three wise men confrontation)
- this lead to the little bit of religious chunk the movie touched on having no relevance and adding nothing, could have given it…
