I saw this a few months ago but posting my review now for posterity.
Truly impressive that such a technical and meticulously constructed film can use the language of film to completely erase the boundaries between viewer and protagonist. I had never really thought so much about how the camera distances viewers from the subjects portrayed. Traditional cinema can indulge in violent imagery with a certain remove. The most unstable and fluid animation I’ve ever seen in a Miyazaki movie. Much like the animation style, this film is always shifting and transforming, moving between past, present, and dream states. At times I felt overwhelmed that I couldn’t piece together all of the different parts of this story, by the end I felt silly for even trying to do so.
Honestly embarrassing for Ari Aster to make this kind of a mommy issues movie
