exiting my musical theatre era to enter my bong joon ho era
this was my first time watching this since ~2020 and i will say, i got so much more out of this now that i understand korean culture and language a bit better (stuff like moongwang calling chungsook unnie)
i’m always gutted by how the movie seems like it’ll end on a positive/hopeful note, but deep down if you’ve been paying attention, you know it’s not a happy ending

one they did the “bad guy just won’t die” bit for the THIRD time my interest starting waning dramatically.
this is a strong and fun concept for an action movie, and i like how they made his inability to feel pain a neurological genetic disability because it makes it feel less like a gimmick. jack quaid plays it well and toes the line between being serious and playing up the silliness of the concept. you win this time, nepotism…

it feels like bong joon-ho knew everyone was going to be watching him after parasite and said, “let me be crystal clear here, i hate capitalism and classism.” if it wasn’t obvious enough for you before in movies like snowpiercer and parasite, he’s making sure even the thickest-skulled people will leave this movie knowing what he’s all about.
