in the most literal way possible, I don't know why this film was made. it's built like a biopic but about a fictional man which isn't inherently a problem but it wasn't clear to me what the reason for bringing his story to life was. touches on soo many interesting subjects, judaism, architecture, being an immigrant in post-ww2 usa, and somehow manages to not say anything meaningful about any of them...

i think what makes this good (aside from the incredible acting from everyone, cunning dialogue, gorgeous visuals etc) is that it rejects archetypical good-bad dichotomies. i like movies that don't tell you who to root for bc they don't treat the viewer like they're incapable of thinking for themselves.
