this movie has changed me for good! i'm not even exaggerating when i say this is probably one of the best movie adaptations of a broadway musical i've seen in recent memory. the camerawork expertly maneuvers around the space, fully taking advantage of the three-dimensional aspect the medium provides. on stage, you only get to see the performance from one angle; here, the quick 180 degree pans and long tracking shots create a much more dynamic and immersive environment, really…
a moving portrayal of shame, pain, and love. i love the dynamic between brothers polo and johnny, especially how polo, initially characterized as the "bum" of the family, goes to such lengths to protect his brother. a film about drug addiction, divorce, and familial strife, a hatful of rain was truly ahead of its time

i am a SLUT for historical dramas, esp those set in asia and this show ATE TF DOWN! the costumes, the set, the makeup, everything looked great (though the CGI looked kinda goofy for some of the bigger set pieces). mariko was hands down my favorite character, with toranaga as a very close second (hiroyuki sanada, you acting GOD). my only issues with the show are that it kind of dragged in the middle and the portuguese catholics v. english…
