I was really impressed by Gene Tierney's performance and how she carries the film into steadily darker territory than I thought would be possible for this era of Hollywood. The concluding section of the film is a letdown - accelerating the pacing and ramping up the melodrama doesn't do much to hide the weaker plotting and acting, but it at least means it can't detract too much from what went before it.
The voiceover and the leant-into feelgood ending felt a bit clumsy/didactic, and honestly there's not a lot about the actual story that feels unfamiliar, but this is a sincere, emotive film that Saoirse carries very well. Also great overall standards of cinematography and sound (particularly what they captured of Orkney), and the nonlinear editing flows naturally
