After seeing a lot of horrifying, unsettling and transgressive films it is a little surprising to find one that hit hard.

At once beautiful and grotesque. This maddening story of church masquerading as state and vice versa I found quite shocking, in a way that feels both unsettling and invigorating.

Oliver Reed is incredible in this, and plays a character with much greater complexity than I was prepared for. There are scenes that move from titillation to the disgusting that…

A tragic, heart breaking film. Such pain and destruction wrought on Japan by nuclear weapons and their aftermath.

The tragedy of Dr. Serizawa, the mirror of Oppenheimer though with the painful lesson of nuclear insanity to allow him to see the escalating destruction already in the 1950s.

The score, every bit of it is spectacular. It pulses with emotion, with endurance, hope empathy and loss. This is my first time seeing the original film, only familiar with the 3rd generation…

I love the weirdness of it all. Fantastic creature designs.

Some great performances. Always love Pattinson being a weird little freak. They should have kissed. Adds a fun hypothetical question for romantic partners: would you have a three way with me and your clone?

Steven Yuen succeeds at being a really convincing manipulative dirt bag. Toni Collette's sauce fixation is deliciously unhinged.

Mark Ruffalo is definitely doing something and I think he is succeeding at his intent. It's just that it is so mannered and particularly Trumpian.

For most of this film, I wasn't sure where this was all headed; and felt not quite engaged. The middle third at least reminds you of the medieval darkness, violence and uncertainty. It makes a kind of sense in the end but up until the penultimate part of the film nothing really clicked.
    Then it did.
Andrei observing the young bell maker brings it all into focus. And brings it into focus for Andrei Roubilev himself. The expression of art…

Jennifer Connelly absolutely goes through hell in this. This is gross in new and exciting ways.

The climactic last half an hour is just bug nuts (complimentary).

Is this movie about parental protectiveness? Interspecies love? The difficulty of growing up in a bunch of different places? All that but mostly,

    As Dominic Torreto would say:
    It's about family.
