Better the 2nd time. You are able to truly start to understand the deeper themes of the story when you aren’t confused and shocked by the bizarre nature of the film like I was the 1st time. I love Studio Ghibli Films!
This movie gets better every time you watch it. There’s just new ways to appreciate each time you turn it on. I always find a new meaning and it only deepens my love for the film.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Can be a little slow, but I love the lead character and his ambition for his craft, and also the tender love he holds for Nahoko. It’s heartbreaking at the end. The parallels that occur where the first thing Nahoko says to Jiro as a child is, “the wind rises, so we must live!”, and then at the end of the movie where she tells him “Jiro, you must live!” is hauntingly beautiful as now he must live without her; however this also points to the fact he got to experience a short yet life changing love with her. Gives me chills.
