This film was able to illustrate perspective in a way that seemed to bring me directly into the experiences of the main character, Mima, so well that as coherent reality seemingly begins to collapse around her, my own sense of what was real in the film and what was imagined became distorted.

I loved the recurring theme of mirrors in this film and how they are symbolic of the incessant perfectionistic self evaluation that happens in such an unforgiving and destructively competitive environment until it finally shatters.
This film takes us through life in the 1920’s Soviet Union and also represents a lot of the artistic project of early socialist realism. It does this by portraying the common experience of workers in factories, average people on the streets, trains and trams crisscrossing the city with contemporary visual effects to add imagination and nuance to these scenes. In this way watching this film provides a snapshot of people in the past trying to imagine life in ways that could create a better future for everyone, I believe we should keep this in mind today
