this may have been my favorite movie of the year (2022). That doesn’t mean it’s the “best” or whatever, but there were a lot of vibes that I really liked.
It took me a while to collect my thoughts and this is my somewhat formal summary of them.
The film regularly confronts the viewer with a stark view of both the cost of war to veterans and the cost of simply living to African-Americans without ever really explicating this ‘message’…
I liked this much more than most of the “continuous kill” movies like Wick. I mean, Brad Pitt. I liked the surprise appearance by Sandra Bullock at the end.
Honestly, one of my favorite movies in the last year or so.
Hughes is the style of a John Wick type of movie, and towns down the silly violence, and trade it for violence, with a very real human stake. It maintains the tension all the way through and is never precious about anything. It feels very honest but not cartoonish about the cruelty of slavery.
I really respect what Fuqua, Will Smith and so many of the actors had to put themselves through to make this movie.
I love that it tells the story of Peter set an important, sobering chapter of our history.
