Paul Schrader might be my favorite filmmaker. I say “might'' because I've only dipped my toe into his catalog. For many years I only knew him as the writer of Taxi Driver and director of controversial films. He sat firmly in the same category as William Friedkin. One who shocks for the sake of shocking. All…

After Life is one of those films where the premise is so perfect I've been afraid to watch it, fearing that it could only let me down. And honestly, at first, I was feeling a little let down. I had assumed I would be watching something fantastical, an imaginative world with deep explanations for how and why…

    Big Movie Boys (4/20)

Fonda’s performance elevates what would otherwise be a well shot but pretty boilerplate thriller. It really is one of the most occupied performances I’ve seen, not an instant where she isn’t fully embodying the character. She actually feels like she is in love conveyed with only her eyes in a way that made me realize how artificial most other portrayals of love on screen are.

Very funny this film is named Klute.

    Watched at The Apollo.

Surprisingly a lot of fun. The melancholy/tragic undertones in some of Bakers other work was present but less at the forefront. I think The Florida Project was probably more deserving of the awards this one got but I ain’t mad.

Honestly can’t believe how much I enjoyed this movie. It actually felt like playing D&D without much pandering and all the winks and nods were handled in really creative ways instead of just stunt casting Matt Marcer or some shit.

It was very reminiscent of the work of Chris Miller and Phil Lord, meaning they approached an IP movie that didn’t need to be good and said “but what if we made it good?”

I laughed out loud more than…

Obviously films like Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom exist, but Im trying to think of a time Ive experienced, first hand, so much controversy over a film. I wasnt nearly as tuned in to this sort of discourse when Irreversible was released and films like mother! and Antichrist or Nymphomaniac were made by filmmakers that had long since established themselves as provocateurs so, while still controversial, their reception didnt feel like people were as shocked or offended by…
