Godzilla: King of the Monsters 2019
After the melancholic realism of Gareth Edwards & Co.'s GODZILLA (2014), I was originally taken aback by the over-the-top bombast of KING OF THE MONSTERS. (To be frank, I wanted more monsters). However, as time goes by I find myself having a great time with Michael Dougherty's take on the Monsterverse. It's a fun, yet simplified, mythology. The cast is stellar, even if some of the cinematic logic is absurd, and Simon Lee's designs for the new kaiju are truly magnificent. 4 stars for Ghidorah.

Death Wish 1974
The original, and still the best. Impossibly satisfying. Accept no substitutes.

Mickey 17 2025
This dark sci-fi comedy starring the brilliant Robert Pattinson marks the cutting edge of modern gallows humor, and represents a culmination of director Bong Joon-ho's penchant for razor-sharp satire and breathtaking special effects. Absolutely phenomenal.
I may or may not have been the only person in the theater laughing every few seconds at MICKEY 17's sick parade of hilarious psychodrama, but -- as far as I'm concerned -- those precious, genuine laughs were worth every moment of awkward self-awareness.

Carrie 1976
While some of the exposition is ham-fisted and the special effects fall a bit short of modern standards, CARRIE is loaded with classic Brian De Palma innovation and experimental technique. Nancy Allen is blisteringly hot as villain Chris Hargensen, and the performances are unflinchingly honest across the board. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie are criminally good in this flick, which endures as one of the all-time greats of Stephen King adaptations.
