The more I think about the Brutalist, and the less Im tempted to exclusively read the movie as a self-serving / self-aggrandizing display of Corbet’s own vain artistic struggles, the more I’m convinced this might be the most compelling film made in years.
Sean Baker is a bonafide pervert, but at least he’s channeling it into good art. Compared to his other films, all the hoopla here felt like gratuitous packaging for what ultimately amounted to a very simple message - but the last scene and the emotional catharsis (disguised as physical release) Mikey Madison and Yuri Borisov collectively deliver is a worthwhile payoff. Having said that, my favourite performance is without question Karren Karagulian as Toros, who imo delivers the funniest performance all year.
The movie equivalent of blowing a huge lead in the 4th quarter. They had Ralph absolutely cooking throughout, they even had Cardinals ripping darts, not to mention some engaging political intrigue featuring Tucci / Lithgow / etc … but it was all unfortunately undone by a genuinely baffling twist.
Have to admit it was so dumb I couldn’t help but laugh after the movie ended. Couldn’t stop repeating a version of the Alden Ehrenreich line from Oppenheimer in my head: “led by the junior Cardinal from Kabul, young guy, trying to make a name for himself … Benitez.” It was that stupid.
Fun movie featuring beautiful travel shots and great food.
