Want to feel? Watch this film.

Perhaps it won’t resonate with everyone, but as a Canadian-born Chinese who moved away from my hometown to pursue an ambitious career, this film feels like it was written for me.

In a time when so many films are coming out with an overtly Asian narrative, this one feels like it hits all the right spots of telling a unique story without forcing down the fact that it is an “Asian” story.…

“Certainty is the enemy of unity.”

What a visually stunning movie. The Holy Roman Catholic Church aesthetic goes HARD.

The start felt like a Grand Budapest hotel alternate universe when they used the seal and it had the crossed keys. And Ralph Fiennes still plays a “Hotel manager” style role here in a sense. What a beautiful film!

Each shot feels so purposeful, and the emotions of the characters really come through.

    It’s a heart breaking story.

The main actress had said she had gotten fired in a similar scenario as she was a high school drama teacher so she was able to leverage her own personal experience for the role.

“Without air” apparently the title in Hungarian has more of a quality of “Running out of air”. Which is an interesting nuance not shown in the translated English title.

When life brings you to your knees, stand back up and go further.  If you keep going, you will find love.

Alright, well maybe not the actual quote I’m still too fucked up to process right now.

Film like this is why I fucking go to the movies.
It’s so beautifully woven together, the acting the dialogue the pacing the plot and cinematography. Meaning layered on meaning tied together across time and space with music that transports you to another…
